June 1, 2017 marked the beginning of what is expected to be a very busy hurricane season. According to Colorado State University, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and The Weather Company, we are in for an above-average number of named storms with 14 expected, six in the Atlantic Basin and two major hurricanes. The 2017 Atlantic Names are: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, Lee, Maria, Nate, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince, and Whitney.
Twenty days into Hurricane Season, the third named storm – Tropical Storm Cindy – impacted District Three as she made her way to land. With tropical storm force winds, heavy rain, isolated tornadoes, rip currents, erosion and flash flooding she pushed her way toward land, increasing the threat of flooded roads in the western part the district. With minor impacts to the traveling public, District Three’s Emergency Management Team used this event as an opportunity to practice and prepare for Hurricane Season.
